Slow LeavesSlow Leaves is the project of Winnipeg, Canada´s Grant Davidson. His music calls to mind a 1970s California country-folk record newly discovered in your parent´s attic. Known for his easy delivery of sincere, poetic lyrics and lilting melodies, Slow Leaves? songs linger in the timeless spaces where heart and humility endure.Enough About Me (Fall 2017) is the most personal album Davidson has yet crafted. Self-produced and born of the demos Davidson had recorded in his Winnipeg basement, these ten songs represent a true distillation of his influences while acknowledging, as the self-referential title suggests, that no man (or record) is an island. The album?s instrumentation is fleshed out by frequent bandmates and collaborators Jason Tait (Bahamas, Weakerthans), Rusty Matyas (Imaginary Cities, Sheepdogs), and Julie Penner (Broken Social Scene, Do Make Say Think), among others.Davidson began making records under his own name with the sparse Tired Limbs for Ashes in 2009 followed by Dust and Violets in 2011, drawing heavily from the sounds of 70s Nashville. In 2014, Davidson, under the new name Slow Leaves, released the critically acclaimed full-length Beauty is so Common which reached 1 on the Canadian !earshot National Folk/Roots chart and was a CBC radio 2 favourite with it?s lead single ?Life of a Better Man?. His music has also been featured on CBC´s Definitely Not The Opera, The Vinyl Cafe, and The Next Chapter. Slow Leaves garnered further attention in 2015 for his selection in the Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class. With the upcoming album, Enough About Me, Slow Leaves continues to spare nothing in creating vivid images and heartfelt connections: the culmination of where he?s been and where he?s going.
The DIY ?supergroup? Shopping formed in 2012, respected players on a young, queer, East London scene that counted basement venue Power Lunches (RIP) as its hub. Their sound ? kinetic, minimalist dance-punk inspired by the likes of ESG, Gang of Four, Slits and Au Pairs ? has won them glowing press from all quarters (NME, Pitchfork, NPR), impressive co-signs (Sleater-Kinney?s Corin Tucker is a fan) and a loyal, cross-continent following accrued over three, acclaimed albums: self-released debut Consumer Complaints , a short-run, DIY-distributed release that sold out in a matter of months and was subsequently reissued by FatCat; Why Choose [2015, FatCat], which saw the band touring the States for the first time; and The Official Body [2018, FatCat] ? produced by indie pop legend Edwyn Collins. Along with cleaner, new production values, their brand new album All Or Nothing (out on February 7th, 2020 on FatCat) sees Shopping experiment further with the sonic additions that coloured The Official Body. Jubilantly ?80s synths and electronic percussion add new textures to their signature minimalist dynamic, flourishes that show up on the accelerating zooms of ?Follow Me? and the frenetic, propulsive robotics of ?For Your Pleasure?. ?We introduced both of these sounds on the last album and just decided to be more liberal with them this time,? explains Easter. Aggs ? feted for her dexterous, Highlife-inspired fret work ? went so far as to down guitars for a number of tracks (?For Your Pleasure?, ?Follow Me?, ?Lies?). ?It´s been so fun developing quite a specific guitar style within Shopping, but I think we were all getting a little sick of it to be honest! It felt very stale to just have every song be the same formula so I?m glad we did away with the guitar for a few songs.

After a nine year lag, it?s time to get back on the wagon with the powerful and long-awaited album Hang from punk rock mainstays Lagwagon. It?s not that the band broke up or even went on hiatus after releasing 2005?s Resolve. They?ve continued a robust tour schedule, and frontman Joey Cape has released a steady stream of original material as a solo artist and with his other projects Bad Astronaut, Scorpios, and Bad Loud (not to mention cranking out cover albums with his other other project Me First and the Gimme Gimmes). ?I?m writing all the time,? says Cape, ?but a lot of times it doesn?t feel appropriate for Lagwagon. It?s not who the band collectively is at the time, and the mold is constantly changing. Sometimes it takes a decade for all the stars to align!? That celestial harmonic convergence finally happened a few years ago when the band was on tour. ?The lightbulb over the head came on, and I knew what the record would sound like and what we?d be saying. It?s less of the ?90s punk rock style we?re known for. But this is the record my band wanted and needed to make.? Indeed, the overall sound of Hang is darker and more hard-charging than some of Lagwagon?s best-known work, as they address themes including loss, betrayal, aging, the environment, and the plight of the common man. It?s not a totally bleak picture, though: all that disconnectedness underscores the need to make emotional investments, ensuring that empathy doesn?t in fact become obsolete. The album also includes a musical tribute to Cape?s late best friend, collaborator, and frequent tour mate Tony Sly (No Use For A Name), who died in July 2012, just days after the two had wrapped what would be their final acoustic tour. The title of ?One More Song? draws from the closing chant of Sly?s solo track ?Liver Let Die,? but was directly inspired by a different song, one we?ll never be able to hear. ?The last few days we were on tour together, he was writing a song and he played it for me and it was amazing,? says Cape about the song?s inspiration. ?What happened to that song? I can?t remember it. I can?t recall it well enough to say ?this is the last song Tony wrote.? The band plan to release an arc of three singles with accompanying videos, but won?t be appearing in the clips themselves, opting to work with a creative team that will focus on their words rather than their faces. ?I think some of the coolest things you see on YouTube are lyric videos: so sophisticated. It?s filmmaking, it?s about how much vision the person has.? So you won?t see their faces on their YouTube channel, but there?s an easy way to check out the mugs of a band who once played 284 shows in a single year: on a stage near you once the album is released on October 28. ?This is the first record we?ve made in the history of the band that we wholeheartedly agree that we want to play every single song on the record live,? says Joey. ?It?ll be great to play new songs. Sheesh, please!?
After revealing yesterday that their highly anticipated third studio album, Women In Music Pt. III, will be released on April 24th (Polydor / Columbia Records), Haim have shared their new single, ‘The Steps,’ from the forthcoming album today. ‘The Steps’ pushes guitar to the forefront in a way the band has not done before. Clean, chorused electric guitar, overdriven lead lines, and strummed acoustic 12-Strings lock in together to generate what feels like an endless chug. The result is one of Haim’s fastest and heaviest songs to date. ‘The Steps’ was written by the band along with longtime collaborators Ariel Rechsthaid and Rostam Batmanglij. The single, as well as the new album, was produced by Danielle, Ariel, and Rostam. Alana, Danielle and Este have also continued to collaborate with renowned director Paul Thomas Anderson to shoot both the music video for ‘The Steps’ as well as the band’s new album art (above). Speaking on the album title, Danielle shares, “the name came to me in a dream and I woke up laughing so I told my sisters.” Alana adds, “I liked it because we are literally women in music and we always get written about that way, so it seemed cool to make it our own and control the narrative. It made me think about some of our experiences more.” And Este says, “I just thought it was funny, plus the initials are WIMP3. Wimp is a hilarious word.” Track Listing is yet to be confirmed.

Mando Diao - BANGPlaygroundSprung out of timeless rock´n´roll guitar riffs and a burning desire; magic has been made. Mando Diao have created an album that is dark, personal, energetic and captivatingly good. BANG is a record that demanded its own existence with the purpose to take on the topics of life?s unforeseeable twists and turns.Freedom has acted as an important source of inspiration for Mando Diao. - We want to inspire people to dare to be as free as they can possibly be. To aspire for freedom rather then being pulled into normative ways, the band says. This album is inspired by all things that are fierce and explosive. When a bombshell is dropped, there is no time for afterthought or hesitation. - No feelings were held back here, Says Björn Dixgård.The darkness present in the lyrics make this album an enticing and nerve tickling portrait of Mando Diao?s very being. The songs are limitless and nothing has stood in the way for the music.-We didn´t hide behind wooly thoughts or tentative descriptions. What we sing, we mean. There is something liberating in calling a spade a spade. The key word for BANG has been hedonism, a philosophical theory about putting freedom and pleasure at the forefront. - We keep carrying on and while illusions burst and the tribulations pile up the bigger our lust for simplicity has grown. The idea for the album came to life during late night parties and big festival appearances. - Sometimes when we?ve played these huge stages we have felt ?fuck, it´s a shame we don´t have more riffs?, so that Björn won´t have to sing his throat off, Jens Siverstedt says. In light of this Mando Diao started to build the songs and the riffs that has then dictated the vibe and tempo of the album. - It was like an epiphany, we are a guitar driven band, of course we should focus on the riffs, explains Jens. Björn adds - thereafter the sound took shape, some songs are on the blues end of the spectra while others are more classic Mando Diao.Parallel to the release of their 2017 album Good Times the band started working on the follow up. - Me and Björn literally started writing and recording new demos at the same time as the last album was released. We had so much energy, energy that transformed into BANG, says Jens. Today it has been a two year process resulting in ten explosive and highly intimate tracks. - This album and our first album, Bring em ? in, are our dirtiest albums, On this album we sound as we do on stage, Björn says. The band has come a long way since the debut back in 2002. With eight studio albums and over 1,5 million albums sold Mando Diao have been a force to be reckoned with. They have played more than 1500 shows in over 30 countries. The line up of the band has changed throughout the years and today Mando Diao consists of Björn Dixgård, Carl-Johan Fogelklou, Daniel Haglund, Jens Siverstedt and Patrik Heikinpieti. Before BANG is released October 18th we can look forward to three singles. One Last Fire, which also stands as the opening track on the album, will be premiered at Dalhalla where Mando Diao performs alongside The Hives and The Sounds on the 30th and 31st of August. - One Last Fire is about feeling the spark within you and deciding to ignite the fire rather then putting it out. Perhaps it´s a little bit about my fascination for Pyromania as well, Björn says laughingly.Single number two is the heavy and catchy Long Long Way. - We wrote it on the tour bus, which is a very unusual thing for us to do. It was during an after party on their way to the next city when they sat and sang together. - Well, I?d call it screaming, Says Björn.Before the release of the album we?ll be treated with one last single. Don´t Tell Me is a middle finger to the establishment Björn explains. - It?s about what I try to teach my kids. It?s important to respect other people but it is also important to not always have that blind kind of respect towards authorities. It?s a sort of red thread throughout our songs. Mando Diao goes their own way which is also demonstrated on Society, a song on the album that comments on today´s world. He Can?t Control You is about a bad relationship that one has managed to leave. - Most people have been in a destructive relationship at one point or another, be it a romance, friendship or part of a family. The amount of recognition in that will speak to a lot of our listeners, Björn says. Linnea Dixgård, sister of Björn came up with the chorus. She?s really talented and it would be a lot of fun if she would start making more music. It?s always nice when I get to work together with her.Get Free is the first Mando Diao song ever to be purely about freedom. Jens came up with the riff that gave birth to an up beat party song prompting us to get loose and let go. You?ll find courage at the very core of this song. I Was Blind treads the same path as it cries out in longing for an end to everything that just has to be done all the time in life. There is definitely a fear among Mando Diao when it comes to the dullness of everyday life. - Take care of your life and do whatever you feel like doing. Make sure to enjoy it, says Björn.BANG also contains a dash of romance. My Woman is a soft and sensual love song whereas Scream For You is more fierce and seductive. The common nominator is unconditional love, free from compromise.Bang Your Head is the ultimate party song, setting the tone for BANG. The song came at the last moment like a powerful dark horse and explains a lot about the bands constant hunt for an audience in motion during their tours. - It?s not that damn easy to be a human being and it?s really important to treasure those wild and beautiful moments, and I think this song in particular and the album overall sums that feeling up really well.Foto credits to Victor Flumé
