Parkinson's Warrior (eBook, ePUB)

On a chilly Thursday in December, Nick Pernisco woke up from his Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery with a few new holes in his head -- and a whole new lease on life with Parkinson's. In the follow up to his best-selling Parkinson's Warrior: Fighting Back and Taking Control, Nick takes you on an intimate, first-person journey through the full DBS experience. With candor and humor, Deep Brain Stimulation: A Journey to Relief offers inspiration and accessible information on what you need to know about DBS, what to expect along each step of the way, and the renewed possibilities for life after DBS. If you or your loved one is considering DBS, but you're unsure, or scared, or just want to know more, this book is for you. From the Introduction On December 6th, 2018 I underwent Deep Brain Stimulation surgery to alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. My first symptoms had appeared in 2009, so it was almost exactly nine years later that I would go under the drill and knife to get some relief. I had some apprehension at first - I mean, it's brain surgery - but I'm glad I went through with it. Although DBS was not a cure for Parkinson's, the surgery set back the clock on my symptoms about 10-12 years. In this sequel to the original Parkinson's Warrior book, I detail the circumstances that lead me to consider Deep Brain Stimulation, the essential details about what the surgery does and how it works, and a first-hand account of my own surgery. Just like in the original Parkinson's Warrior book, I pull no punches. I give you every detail, no matter how frightening it might sound. My hope is that, after reading this book, Deep Brain Stimulation won't sound so frightening. The reason I wrote this book is to demonstrate that an option exists to alleviate Parkinson's symptoms, and that people with Parkinson's do not have to lose hope when their symptoms worsen. I had Deep Brain Stimulation surgery to give me time to live my life more normally until a cure for Parkinson's is discovered. The second part of this book involves my life after DBS surgery. I discuss some expectations I had about the surgery, how I felt after surgery, and how having a Warrior mentality helped me adjust to a new normal. I hope this second section will inspire you and make you think about your life, remembering that we only get one shot at life, so we better make the most of it. Finally, I hope that by reading this book, you will consider having DBS. It's brain surgery, but it's not so scary, and it will absolutely change your life. I've gotten my life back thanks to DBS, and so I'm happy to sing its praises from the rooftops. I look forward to you joining me on this journey as I recount my story. And please, if you ever have any questions or need guidance to help find the right information for you, write to me since I'd love to hear from you: nick@parkinsonswarrior.com.

Heaven is for Real

#1 New York Times best-seller with more than 11 million copies sold and Amazon's #17 best-selling book of all time. Heaven Is for Real was the best-selling non-fiction book of 2011 as reported by Nielsen's Bookscan, and was developed as a major motion picture by Sony in 2014. "Do you remember the hospital, Colton?" Sonja said. "Yes, mommy, I remember," he said. "That's where the angels sang to me." When Colton Burpo made it through an emergency appendectomy, his family was overjoyed at his miraculous survival. What they weren't expecting, though, was the story that emerged in the months that followed-a story as beautiful as it was extraordinary, detailing their little boy's trip to heaven and back. Colton, not yet four years old, told his parents he left his body during the surgery-and authenticated that claim by describing exactly what his parents were doing in another part of the hospital while he was being operated on. He talked of visiting heaven and relayed stories told to him by people he met there whom he had never met in life, sharing events that happened even before he was born. He also astonished his parents with descriptions and obscure details about heaven that matched the Bible exactly, though he had not yet learned to read. With disarming innocence and the plainspoken boldness of a child, Colton tells of meeting long-departed family members. He describes Jesus, the angels, how "really, really big" God is, and how much God loves us. Retold by his father, but using Colton's uniquely simple words, Heaven Is for Real offers a glimpse of the world that awaits us, where as Colton says, "Nobody is old and nobody wears glasses." Heaven Is for Real will forever change the way you think of eternity, offering the chance to see, and believe, like a child. Continue the Burpo' s story in Heaven Changes Everything: The Rest of Our Story. Heaven Is for Real also is available in Spanish, El cielo es real.

Mirror, Mirror: The Uses and Abuses of Self-Lov...

Everyone deplores narcissism, especially in others. The vain are by turns annoying or absurd, offending us whether they are blissfully oblivious or proudly aware of their behavior. But are narcissism and vanity really as bad as they seem? Can we avoid them even if we try? In Mirror, Mirror, Simon Blackburn, the author of such best-selling philosophy books as Think, Being Good, and Lust, says that narcissism, vanity, pride, and self-esteem are more complex than they first appear and have innumerable good and bad forms. Drawing on philosophy, psychology, literature, history, and popular culture, Blackburn offers an enlightening and entertaining exploration of self-love, from the myth of Narcissus and the Christian story of the Fall to today’s self-esteem industry.A sparkling mixture of learning, humor, and style, Mirror, Mirror examines what great thinkers have said about self-love—from Aristotle, Cicero, and Erasmus to Rousseau, Adam Smith, Kant, and Iris Murdoch. It considers today’s “me”-related obsessions, such as the “selfie,” plastic surgery, and cosmetic enhancements, and reflects on connected phenomena such as the fatal commodification of social life and the tragic overconfidence of George W. Bush and Tony Blair. Ultimately, Mirror, Mirror shows why self-regard is a necessary and healthy part of life. But it also suggests that we have lost the ability to distinguish—let alone strike a balance—between good and bad forms of self-concern. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Simon Vance. Inspirational Stories of the Visually Challenge...

According to the National Eye Institute by 2020 it is estimated that 5.5 million people of all ages will be blind or have low vision. Low vision is impairment that cannot be corrected by standard eyeglasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery. That is one out of 28 and that is shocking. We also have a diabetes epidemic that can lead to diabetic retinopathy. Is the world ready? I don’t think so. Are you aware of what this might mean to you? The purpose of this book is to let listeners know that loss of eyesight is not a death sentence. Twelve people have shared their stories detailing how they met the enemy in their own lives and how they cope on a day-to-day basis. Some of them were born blind or became blind after a period of normal sight. Others have slowly lost vision and have learned to cope at different stages. Emotions play a major part in this experience and listening to how others dealt with anger and depression helps the newcomers know they are not alone. The book began as a tribute to my husband who became instantly blind at the age of 10. When we married I entered his world and became a part of the low-vision community and still am in relationship with them even though my husband died in 2016. It is in Tucson, Arizona where I met the folks who graciously shared their stories with me. They detail not just the physical facts, but the emotional turmoil that took over when they were first told they had low vision that could not be restored with eyeglasses; or, they were blind or would gradually become so. Including resources, organizations, and definitions, along with the stories makes this book useful to much of the population and particularly to those over the age of 60. I believe people who are already experiencing low vision will find this book valuable because of the sense of support they find in the stories, and resources they might not be aware of. Inspirational Stories of the Visually Challenged plus Resources might 1. Language: English. Narrator: Paul MacKinney. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/169761/bk_acx0_169761_sample.mp3.
